Born in Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Claudio Marigo brought himself up between the sea and the Atlantic Rainforest. These initial discoveries of nature had a deep-rooted influence on his life and work. In 1975 a commission from the Editora José Olympio publishing house took him to the Pantanal wetlands in Mato Grosso State. In the early 1980s, he met biologist José Márcio Ayres, who was studying the ecology of Amazon primates, and he went to visit his research area on Mamirauá lake, in order to photograph the white uakari monkey. This friendship resulted in a long-lasting collaboration, which is still going strong today. In 1985, they suggested to the Brazilian Government that the Mamirauá Reserve should be established, finally decreed in 1990. In this year he also organized an expedition with a team of ornithologists to locate the almost extinct Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) in the sertão drylands of Northeastern Brazil. Luiz Claudio Marigo believes, that the quality and the beauty of photographs are vital to attract the attention of people and win over their hearts, boosting the number of people who defend nature: "I hope that my work get across the same feelings of happiness and excitement that I feel in these wild environments, and that my photographs do not simply turn into yet another document of the past."

In Rio de Janeiro geboren, streifte Luiz Claudio Marigo schon als Kind durch die Wildnis der Hügel hinter seinem Haus und spielte in Sand und Wellen am Copacabana-Strand. Diese intensiven frühen Erfahrungen mit der Natur prägten sein Leben nachhaltig. 1975 wurde er von einem Verlagshaus eingeladen, die Feuchtgebiete des Pantanal in Mato Grosso zu fotografieren. In den frühen 80er Jahren begegnete er dem Biologen José Márcio Ayres. Aus der Freundschaft beider Männern entwickelte sich eine bis heute andauernde Zusammenarbeit. 1985 schlugen sie der Regierung Brasiliens die Einrichtung des Mamirauá Reservats vor, das 1990 verwirklicht wurde. In diesem Jahr entdeckte Luiz Claudio Marigo auch mit einer Expedition von Ornithologen, die er für sie organisiert hatte, in Nordostbrasilien ein letztes Exemplar des Spix's Ara (Cyanopsitta spixii). Luiz Claudio Marigo ist davon überzeugt, dass Fotos ein wichtiger Beitrag sind, die Menschen in den Bann der Natur zu ziehen und ihre Herzen für ihren Schutz zu gewinnen: "Ich hoffe, dass meine Arbeit das Glücksgefühl rüberbringt, das ich in diesen wilden Landschaften empfinde und dass meine Fotos mal nicht wie irgendwelche Dokumente aus der Vergangenheit angesehen werden."
